Session 1 for Cohort-A

  • (10 min) Welcome & introduction. Office hours (generally virtual: email, cell phone, Teamviewer).
  • ( 5 min) Brief overview of (our course web site)
  • (10 min) Syllabus discussion.
  • (25 min) Reflect -> Pre-Requisite Welcome Activity
    • How was 2-min Welcome Message created? ____  
      How might something like this be used in the classroom? ____
    • gMail acct: why gmail? why multiple accts ... yours, ours, Willamette's, other.
    • Class Data Sheet: (see left nav). Discuss
  • (25 min) Class Activity (small groups)
Reflect on the videos Did You Know (shift happens) and Social Media Revolution as follows:
    • Question: What was your note taking process during the above video clips (mental, scribbles, purposeful)? ______ 
    • Groups of four. Prepare 15 to 25 second script. You will only have 10 to 12 minutes to brainstorm and complete. 
      • Include a few significant statistics, and how might this impact your philosophy of education or role as an educator in preparing students for their future?

    • Class Activity:  Use cell phone (Yodio) to record group results. Check back later. Podcast? Cloud computing?

  • (10 min) Assignment #1 (due prior to beginning of next class)
  • Take a self portrait (mugshot) using any tool of your choice (digital camera, webcam, Smartphone, scanner, etc).
    • Send a message (to your Google Account) that includes an attachment of the snapshot.
  • If you're a little rusty on Blogging, take a few moments to review this Blogging Resource Site (focus on the short video clips).
  • Since you already have a Google Account, use Googles Blogger to create your personal Ed Tech 520 blog for this course. 
    • The suggested basic criteria is as follows:
    • Blog Name: Example: Joe Brown, who is in Cohort-A would be joeb-cohortA
      • Sally Rider, show is in Aspire, would be srider-Aspire
    • Create POST #1Write several paragraphs of a personal Bio (include the grade level(s) and subjects you wish to teach, hobbies, interests, etc.)
      • Insert your mugshot (the one you emailed to yourself).
    • Create POST #2Describe several specific applications of Blogging that you may be able to use as an instructor or possible activities for your students. You may use examples from the following links or additional ones you have discovered.
  • Return to our class Class Data Sheet. Select the Cohort-A tab. Copy/paste your URL (address) of your Blog in the appropriate data cell alongside your name. Save and test it out.
  • Your instructor will respond to all blog posts, and be sure to request assistance if needed.

BREAK TIME - 15 minutes

Experimenting with Google Docs 
  • Class Activities:
    (5 min) Update the electronic Attendance Sheet (see left nav. bar) as follows:
    • Login Processone must be logged into their personal Willamette Google Acct.   Diiscuss pros/cons of this strategy.

  • (~30 min)  Experimenting with Google Docs as personal productivity and classroom instruction tool
    • Take poll on current usage (doc, sheet, presentation, etc.)
    • Log-out and to get overview.
      • Summary: create new, upload existing, sharing, collaborating, publishing, compatibility, export, backup 
    •  Log-in and demo 
  • Class Google Docs Activity:
    • Groups of 3 to 4. 
    • One member create a new Google Doc and invite other group members as editors. Name the document "Google Docs Activity".
    • Include all your group members on the top line of the new document
      • Section 1: Include a brief description of the tool and its features.
      • Section 2: A bulleted list of how this tool could be used to improve productivity or enhance teaching/learning
      • Section 3: Include a bulleted list of your reflections (contributed by all group members as the process develops)
      • Section 4: Use the remainder of the document to experiment with Inserting images, tables, links, equations, apply formatting, 
    • Be sure to explore & discuss the File & download as (a variety of options)

Assignment #2:   Prepare and submit your reflection of the OTEN conference.

  • NOTE: this is not due until Session 3. Discuss progress in next class.
  • Use a free Web2.0 tool called Yodio to record your reflection, then Post in your student Blog
    • Here are several demos of finished products.  demo 1  |  demo 2
  • Use your cell phone to record a 1 to 2 minute summary/reflection of the keynote and two work sessions
  • Toll free: 1-571-730-5588  (you may wish to make this a 'favorite' in your cell phone contacts for quick dial)
  • Drag/drop your audio onto a slide(s), and include pics if you took some
  • Follow the Yodio instructions to create your video.
  • A URL (web address) will be generated. Share with anyone! Fun and easy to use.
  • Create a new Post in your personal course blog titled:  OTEN conference
    • Provide a brief, articulate overview of the conference, then link and embed your Yodio presentation.
